What is a long-term power outage?

A long-term, or extended, power outage is a little- or no-notice power outage that affects a large geographic area for a long period of time. The worst of these events where the power outage could last for months or even years are known as catastrophic power outages. Who will come to your rescue? Nobody, you will be on your own in total chaos!

Sure makes you wonder why all of the elite individuals, government officials, and others who have an abundance of wealth are already well stocked in emergency food and water with underground safe houses powered by solar panels and batteries. Could it be that they know something we don't know?

What would happen if there was a long-term power outage?

A long-term power outage due to a local blackout, wide spread grid failure, grid sabotage, cyber attack, or severe weather will most likely disrupt cell phone towers, all forms of communications and transportation, closing down all retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, water stations, ATMs, banks, pharmacies and other services. Such a catastrophic event is likely to cause food spoilage and water contamination as well. As you can imagine, a catastrophic power outage would result in total chaos. A place we do not want to go!

A power outage can occur for many reasons, short-term or long-term. The primary question and concern is... how do you survive without electricity even for a few days? Electricity plays a big role in our ability to survive.

But, how could this happen?

Mainly because we now live in an uncertain world. Our power grid is ancient, undersized, and rusting away while the Green New Deal consequences are demanding more and more power, from an already overloaded power grid. Periodic blackouts and power failures are more likely with every forth coming day along with higher electric rates than every seen in history. If that isn't enough, every country in the world that hates us can take down our power grid at will. A future cyber war is reality, another good reason to be concerned and worry. But, that couldn't happen! Oh, really? Personally, I'm calmly waiting and I'm ready! If you are reading this, you are probably concerned and worried as well.

The root of it all is simple: it is hard to build anything healthy and whole from a place of anxiety, worry, hesitance, apprehension, self-doubt, uncertainty, or insecurity. If you happen to be self-dependent and self-reliant and have a plan to survive a catastrophic power outage, you feel safe and happy and are not worried about life or the future and you feel free from danger, damage, fear, and care. It is a real good every day feeling!

You should know that when the power grid fails, there will be no electricity, no water, the toilets will not flush, the grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations will be closed, and you will be cut off from the rest of the world. You will be on your own! Now is the time to take this possibility seriously unless you feel really lucky.

Your refrigerator, freezer, washing machine, medical devices and all other electrical devices will stop working. No heat, no water, no lights, no computers, no phones, no just about everything. No clean drinking water and no taking a bath or shower is not good!

If your budget allows (or not), an alternative power supply will be necessary to survive a long-term power outage. A solar generator or solar panel system can power a refrigerator, washing machine, microwave, medical devices and many other convenient and essential devices. It can provide energy to cook food, run a well pump and pressure tank, charge batteries and phones and more. It will better help you return to a ''semi-normal'' routine during a blackout or long-term power outage. And maybe even save your life!

A gas, diesel or propane generator can be useful if it starts and continues to run and while the fuel is available. Probably good for a short-term power outage, but then what? Fossil fueled generators make a lot of no noise and will attract people roaming in your area. With the solar generator or solar panel system option, there is no engine noise, the sun fuel is replenished daily and free, it is quiet and reliable for up to 25 years or more. The cost for a complete plug and play solar generator or solar system kit is about the same cost as a generator where a generator will require a continuous supply of fuel.

Our house is all electric, no gas, no oil and includes a medium sized Interconnected Grid-Tied Hybrid Solar System with battery backup. Four of our outbuildings are powered by independent small solar systems. We own several generators and understand that generators can only produce power when fuel is available, otherwise it is worthless.

If or when our out-dated and over loaded country-wide power grid goes down, we all go down! Unless you have your own reliable and independent power company, like an Interconnected Grid-Tied Solar System or Off-Grid Solar System.

If you trust our power grid will continue on forever with no significant interruption, then you should probably not waste your time on this website. Otherwise, read on because there is much more to consider in a long-term power outage if you plan to survive!

What should you do before a long-term power outage occurs?

  1. Determine how you will communicate or gather with your loved ones.
  2. Determine what will be your survival plan and priorities.
  3. Gradually gather and store your survival food, water and supplies.
  4. Practice or rehearse your survival plan while you still have time.
  5. Relax and rest assured that you have a plan to survive.

What should you do first when a power outage is expected to be a long-term power outage?

  1. Turn off and unplug all electronics and appliances, switch or turn off all breakers on your panel box, if possible.
  2. Collect all of your battery operated electronics (remote controls, game controllers, toys...), collect the batteries.
  3. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
  4. Fill your tubs and sinks with water, if water is still available.
  5. Gather all flashlights, candles, lighters, matches, and batteries for the night hours.
  6. Last, cross your fingers and pray for a miracle.

What should you do when a power outage is determined to be a long-term power outage?

If you are prepared, put your survival plan into action and relax!
